The hotel DER ACHTERMANN
... a long history...

Experience very special moments on the edge of Goslar's old town at Harz at the Achtermann - your hotel in the heart of Germany. Here you can experience over 500 years of history. Our hotel is partially integrated into the venerable city wall, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These walls, including the Achtermann Tower, could be a lot

from German history if they could speak. From the Middle Ages - the tower with its 5m thick walls was completed in 1508 - to more recent history - parts of the constituent meetings for the founding of the CDU with the election of Konrad Adenauer as chairman took place in our Adenauerzimmer.

In 1501, the town of Goslar began building the original Achtermannzwinger at the bend in the wall between the Breite Tor and the Rosentor near today's pedestrian bridge connecting Mauerstraße and Bismarckpark over the railroad tracks in order to extend the town's protection.

Shortly afterwards, in 1508, the then Rosentorzwinger was completed (today called Achtermann), which has essentially been preserved to this day. It has a diameter of 22m with a wall thickness of approx. 5m. The masonry is 16m high and it originally had a pointed, slate-covered conical roof.

The tower served as a defensive tower in front of the town. The town of Goslar, which had become wealthy thanks to the rich ore deposits in the Rammelsberg mine, was attacked and besieged several times by the Duke of Brunswick.

16th century

At the turn of the millennium around 1900, the hotel DER ACHTERMANN was one of the first hotels in Europe to rent out rooms equipped with private bathrooms.

Until then, it was standard for accommodation that you could only book one bedroom. The toilets and washing facilities were still on the floor and were shared by all guests.

It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that it gradually became standard to have a bathroom exclusively at one's disposal. Until the beginning of the 20th century, for example, guests at the renowned Hotel Sacher in Vienna were served water in elegant copper kettles in their guest rooms.

Around 1900

Goslar was largely spared major destruction during the Second World War, as it functioned as a hospital town and was not bombed as such. To protect the town from damage, in April 1945, shortly before the US troops marched in, the town council put up Red Cross flags and signs with the words "Lazarettstadt" (hospital town) on the main access roads.

During the Second World War, parts of the hotel were initially used as an auxiliary and replacement hospital and then, as the front line approached, as a military hospital for the war wounded.

The first federal party conference of the CDU took place in the historic imperial city of Goslar from October 20 to 22, 1950. The 386 delegates adopted the party statutes and elected Konrad Adenauer as its first chairman. More than a year after the first Bundestag election and the formation of a government, the CDU was officially founded as a federal party.

It is rumored that one of the constituent meetings took place in our subsequently named Adenauer Room. Today, you can hold small conferences and meetings for up to 12 people in this room.

The fine wood paneling in the Adenauerzimmer is a listed building.

Why "Achtermann"?

There are several myths surrounding the naming of our hotel, with three possible variants:

1) The tower was initially called the Rosentorzwinger, as it served to protect the Rosentor. Around the year 1800, it was renamed the "Achtermann Zwinger" due to its function as a guard and defense tower ("Acht-geben").

2) An influential patrician family with the surname Achtermann made a name for themselves in the Goslar town council. The tower was named "Achtermann-Zwinger" in their honor. However, it is certain that the Achtermann family did not yet exist in Goslar and the surrounding area in 1508, when the Zwinger was built. The kennel can therefore only have been named after the Achtermann family at a later date.

3) One of the highest mountains in the Harz is called "Achtermann". The Zwinger, which was one of the highest buildings in Goslar at the time, was named after this elevation.

The first mention of a restaurant in the Achtermann Tower dates back to 1840. The restaurant "Altdeutsche Stuben" was first mentioned in 1868. The hotel was then built in 1899.

The tower of our Achtermann has been used in many ways over the years. Among other things, as a sheepfold or as a place to store ice for cooling food. For example, ice was removed from a nearby pond in winter to be used as a "refrigerator" in the cool cellars of the tower well into the summer.
